The ZOOM! In -office Whitening System consists of a halogen lamp filtered to emit light in the 350-400nm range. Unlike other systems, Zoom! light generates minimal heat which helps make the procedure comfortable. The Zoom! light activated gel was developed after years of research done by Discus Dental, the leader in professional tooth whitening. The gel is a proprietary scientifically formulated, ph balanced Hydrogen Peroxide that, when activated by light, gently penetrates the enamel and dentin to remove deep stains and discolorations. As the Hydrogen Peroxide breaks down, the oxygen is released and penetrates the teeth, removing stains caused by coffee, tea, chocolate, tobacco, red wine, sauce, beetroot, etc.
The Zoom! company worked extensively with optics experts to create a new custom sodium-free short arc bulb , which emits the optimal bleaching spectrum at the highest power output to obtain the desired results.
There are many causes. The most common include aging, consumption of staining substances such as coffee, tea, colas, tobacco, and red wine. As well, during tooth formation, consumption of tetracycline, excessive fluoride and different diseases can cause tooth discoloration.
Who can benefit from Zoom tooth whitening?
Almost anyone! However, depending on the structure of the teeth, whitening may not be as effective on some people as it is for others. Darker stains, such as those caused by antibiotics, are more difficult to whiten. We can determine if you are a viable candidate for Zoom! whitening through a thorough oral exam including a teeth shade assessment.
Do many people whiten their teeth?
More people whiten their teeth than you might imagine. A bright, sparkling smile can make a big difference for everyone! The Zoom! Teeth Whitening System makes it easier and faster than ever before.
Is Zoom! Tooth Whitening safe?
Yes!
Extensive research and clinical studies indicate that whitening teeth under the supervision of a Zoom! trained and accredited dentist is very safe. The active ingredient in the ZOOM! whitening treatment is Hydrogen Peroxide that changes to Oxygen. This has been safely used in dentistry for over a hundred years not only for whitening teeth, but also for the treatment of gums and oral soft tissue. Numerous scientific articles have shown that using Hydrogen Peroxide to whiten teeth is effective and safe.
The ZOOM! tooth whitening treatment has no adverse effect on existing restorations (fillings or crowns) and does soften, damage or weaken the enamel on the tooth structure. Zoom! is not recommended for children under 13 years of age or pregnant & lactating women.
One of the unique features of the Zoom! system is that minimal heat is transferred during the procedure, thus ensuring a safe experience.
Will it hurt and are there any side effects?
Some people will experience temporary increased tooth sensitivity to cold during or after treatment. These symptoms will disappear within 1-3 days after completion of treatment. The temporary sensitivity can be minimal for some yet others will notice it similar to ice-cream sensitivity. Patients with very sensitive teeth will need a pretreatment before the whitening procedure. This will be assessed at consultation appointment. We will also give you plenty of advice and fluoride gel to help minimize this temporary sensitivity. No needles or drills are used!
How long does ZOOM! in-office whitening take?
To get fantastic results, the procedure will take at least 90 minutes. We begin with a preparation period of about 25 minutes followed by actual whitening with Zoom! ADVANCED POWER LIGHT for 45 minutes. At the end you will have the fluoride treatment. Taking time will give better results.

The results are spectacular! Clinical studies have shown that ZOOM! tooth whitening treatment achieved up to 12 shades lighter with the average being 8 shades. Individual results may vary and will depend upon your age, type of stains, initial tooth colour and any visible restorations (white fillings & crowns, bridges).
